The Valkenburg painter Charles Quaedvlieg (1823-1874) is held in higher esteem abroad than in his birthplace Valkenburg aan de Geul. At a relatively early age Quaedvlieg left for Italy more specifically for Rome.

This accounts for the fact that he is more or less forgotten in his native country.
But in the international art-trade his reputation is made. Quaedvlieg’s paintings date from just before the rise of modern landscape-painting. For a proper appreciation of his historical paintings and Italian landscapes we should transport ourselves mentally to different times. The aim of this website is to serve as an aid in explaining Quaedvlieg’s life en works. At the same time this website offers a platform for the exchange of data about this Valkenburg painter.

We friendly call on anybody who owns works by Quaedvlieg or who can supply us with further information about this artist to contact us. In that way we hope to be able to realize a catalogue raisonné, issue a publication and organize an exhibition.
